The Twenties
When we were young, we were just dying to grow up, to reach the twenties where we believe all the freedom was what we wanted. But was it?
2019 - Graduation year. Everyone thought of new beginnings. Carissa and Nathaniel were in love. They overcame all the judgement, rumours and fights and remain strong with each other. They thought that finally they could be together with all the freedom that came with graduation - looking for new job, living together and building a life together. Little did they know, life had other plans in mind.
Carissa's grandfather had just been diagnosed with dementia. No one in the family knew how to deal with dementia especially the mood swings and the deteriorating memory. Carissa was the oldest in the family, she never felt like she was born as a girl. She felt like she was born as the man of the house. So instead, she chose to stay behind to take care of her family. This broke her heart because she never wanted a long distance relationship. Although she was daring, but at the same time, she was a coward. She did not dared to pursue her love harder. She did not dared to push harder. However, her heart does not love any less. She loves Nathaniel with all her heart. He was the first guy she ever really loved.
Nathaniel, on the other hand, went back to his own hometown. Searching for a new job and a new beginning. Away from the hurt and emotional trauma that he had been keeping deep inside him. He was a great responsible man with the fear of loving those that love. He put on a facade of not caring but deep down he cares a lot. Some would even say that he has a huge ego. But deep down he was deeply hurt by failed relationships and a broken family. He doesn't want to be hurt anymore by the unfairness in life. But that turned him into a colder person.
You might think why would two people so different yet end up together. You could say that Carissa saw a side of Nathaniel that no one else saw. The child side. The side that wants to be love and to be care for. The side that wants a happy family. Carissa wanted to save Nathaniel of the pain he was feeling. She wanted to save him.
Remember. Everyone around us has a battle whether we know about it or not. Everyone wears a mask everyday. To put on a show that others want to see but never honest to their own feelings. What we can do is - be kind, be generous, be loving.
